Alexander Adaire School and Lumber Mill

Alexander Adaire was born on May 7, 1834, in Philadelphia, and lived in the Kensington/Fishtown for his entire life. In addition to running the Alexander Adaire lumber mill on N. Howard Street near Berks, he was the president of the Philadelphia Lumber Exchange.

Among various buildings in the area, the wood from his mill was used to construct a school at at Thompson and Palmer streets in 1892. Adaire became involved in the board of education before founding its night school program, and ultimately the school was named in his honor.
